Role Overview
As a Security Screening Officer, your duties will include operating screening equipment and making real-time decisions to identify and prevent dangerous items from entering secure areas.
What You'll Do
- Operate screening technology to identify prohibited items in baggage, cargo, and on passengers
- Conduct thorough searches and screenings, which may involve pat-downs and bag inspections
- Lift and carry bins and items weighing up to 50 lbs
- Manage terminal entry and exit points
- Assist travelers by providing directions and answering questions
- Maintain focus and composure in high-pressure environments (e.g., alarms, crowds, and time constraints)
- Adhere to TSA protocols and stay updated on new procedures as they evolve
Minimum Qualifications (Meet One)
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED/HiSET/TASC)
OR
- Experience: 1 year of full-time experience in the security field, aviation screening, or as an X-ray technician
Both paid and volunteer experience may be considered. Part-time experience will be credited proportionally.
Requirements to Be Hired
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National
- At least 18 years old by application time
- Must pass the TSA CBT exam
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods
Hiring Process (What to Expect)
Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications are required to complete the TSA computer-based test (TAB CBT). This timed exam assesses your attention to detail, object recognition, and reading comprehension. Successfully passing the exam significantly enhances your chances of being hired.
