Job Description
Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
The Lead Maritime Trades Instructor serves as both educator and program leader, responsible for providing high-quality instruction, maintaining curriculum integrity, enforcing safety standards, and fostering employer and credential partner engagement. This position ensures students gain the technical skills, certifications, and industry connections necessary to thrive in the maritime workforce, while supporting the overall growth and sustainability of the training program.
Support and assist Workforce Solutions instructors and staff in providing a quality teaching /learning environment by setting up labs, maintaining and ordering lab equipment and supplies, directing and supporting instructors and delivering lab and lecture instruction as assigned.
This is a grant funded position.
Minimum Qualifications
- Occupational experience in maritime or related trades
- Ability to operate welding equipment and oxy-fuel torch system.
- Ability to utilize computerized systems, including familiarity with spreadsheet and word processing software.
- Ability to instruct students and make oral and written presentations
- Ability to operate measurement and inspection equipment such as digital and analog volt/amp/ohm multi-meters.
- Ability to operate audiovisual equipment such as a projector or smartboard.
- Ability to operate forklift and material moving equipment safely.
- Knowledge of Safety (OSHA, etc.)
- Knowledge of procurement, preferably eVA
- Knowledge of inventory.

- Work experience in an educational setting.
- Work experience in shipbuilding and ship repair
