Probationary Period Notice

Permanent appointments are subject to a probationary period. The probationary period provides an opportunity for the employee to demonstrate their ability to perform the duties of the position satisfactorily. During this time, performance and conduct will be evaluated to determine whether permanent status should be granted at the end of the probationary term. The probationary period typically ranges from eight (8) to twenty-six (26) weeks.

The work involves providing for the security of the computer systems and network for the Division of Information and Support Services of Erie County. The incumbent works under the Senior Information Security Analyst in planning and executing security measures to protect the computer systems and network against infiltration, viruses, malware and cyber-attacks. This position differs from the Senior Information Security Analyst by virtue of overall responsibility and technical ability. The incumbent monitors computer systems and network proactively looking for potentially dangerous threats and determines the risk and remediation activities. The incumbent also researches information technology security vulnerabilities, alerts and threat trends. Supervision is exercised over technical staff across functional areas. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Senior Information Security Analyst. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Assists in establishing enterprise security policies and procedures;

Monitors enterprise compliance with information technology security policies and procedures for systems and infrastructure;

Deploys information technology security controls and processes for systems and infrastructure;

Monitors information technology systems, networks, and processes for security events;

Participates in risk assessments to identify vulnerabilities or security exposures;

Participates in response to systems and network security-related malicious events and potential computer attacks;

Implements vulnerability management including virus protection and version/patch management;

Establishes intrusion detection and data loss prevention programs;

Collaborates in planning for infrastructure design and review of software acquisitions/ upgrades; reviews to ensure appropriate level of systems and network security;

Participates in the reviews of applications and services supplied by information technology service providers for appropriate level of security controls;

May instruct the work force on best procedures for information technology security;

Monitors information technology logs and reports;

Documents and monitors security controls, reports, and processes.

A.) Graduation from an regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Cyber security or closely related field and three (3) years of experience in systems software, systems analysis, or application programming, and included experience in information security* ; or:

B.) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Cyber security or closely related field and five (5) years of experience in systems software, systems analysis or application programming, of which three (3) years was experience in information security*; or:

C.) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

NOTE 1: *Information security. for the purpose of qualifying applications is defined as the processes designed and implemented to protect information, systems, and networks against unauthorized access, use, or disruption utilizing various forms of technology.

NOTE 2: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.

Remote Work Eligibility

This position may be eligible for one remote work day per week, subject to departmental needs and supervisory approval, after successful completion of the probationary period. Participation in remote work is not guaranteed and may be modified or revoked at any time.
