Director of API Growth (RAG API)

CustomGPT.ai is a profitable, bootstrapped AI SaaS company that lets enterprises deploy custom AI agents on their own data, fast, secure, and with real ROI. The Director of API Growth will be responsible for building the growth engine for the RAG API, focusing on API adoption and driving measurable revenue growth through developer engagement and community building.

Responsibilities

• Build the API Adoption Engine (Activation + Retention)
• Define the developer adoption funnel and instrument it end-to-end
• Improve time-to-first-success and activation rates (first query, first 100 queries, production key)
• Identify friction points and ship fixes (docs, SDKs, examples, error UX, onboarding)
• Ship Developer Growth Assets (that compound)
• Create or overhaul:
• Quickstarts and “known-good” reference implementations
• Integration recipes (LangChain/LlamaIndex/etc.), starter apps, and templates
• Best-practice guides for evaluation, grounding, and production reliability
• Run AI-Driven Lifecycle + Experimentation (PLG)
• Build behavior-triggered onboarding and lifecycle journeys (activation → expansion → winback)
• Run tight A/B experiments across docs, onboarding, messaging, and offers
• Connect marketing activity to usage outcomes (queries, retention, expansion)
• Own the Narrative: Proof, Rankings, and Leaderboards
• Turn performance into belief:
• Benchmark strategy + submissions + reproducible eval kits
• “Why we win” pages, comparisons, and technical proof content
• Case studies and technical deep-dives that developers actually trust
• Build GTM Engineering Workflows (automation + signal → action)
• Use product signals (usage, intent, drop-off) to trigger:
• The right lifecycle messages
• Sales/CS alerts
• Outbound sequences and partner motions
• Create dashboards that tie GTM actions → usage → MRR
• Community + Ecosystem Loops
• Launch a lightweight “API Champions” program (builders/educators/operators)
• Run technical office hours, workshops, and partner co-marketing
• Make the community a distribution engine for adoption and credibility
• Diagnose + Instrument
• Clear adoption funnel, baseline dashboards, and weekly operating cadence
• Top 3 activation leaks identified with a prioritized fix plan
• Quickstart / onboarding improvements shipped
• Ship the Machine
• Lifecycle journeys live (onboarding, activation nudges, production push)
• Measurable lift in activation and/or time-to-first-success
• First “proof assets” shipped (benchmark kit, reference app, comparison page)
• Create Compounding Loops
• Repeatable ranking/leaderboard motion operating monthly
• Pipeline system live (usage signals → GTM workflows → qualified conversations)
• API Champions/community motion launched
• Visible growth in weekly queries and early impact on API MRR

Skills

• 3–8+ years in a high-ownership environment (devtools, APIs, PLG SaaS, growth engineering, DevRel, technical PMM, or similar)
• You can translate technical depth into adoption (docs, examples, messaging, workflows)
• Strong analytical instincts: you can define metrics, instrument funnels, and run experiments
• Builder mindset: you can prototype automations and workflows (APIs, webhooks, basic scripting, SQL)
• Founder mentality: scrappy, biased to action, thrives in ambiguity, ships without needing permission
• RAG/LLM experience (retrieval evals, grounding, indexing, latency, quality measurement)
• Experience growing an API product with usage-based revenue
• Prior dev community building (writing, speaking, OSS, meetups)
