DC Water provides essential water services to over 700,000 residents and millions of visitors in the District of Columbia. The Summer Intern, Innovation will gain hands-on experience with AI technologies in the water sector, working on projects related to chatbots and generative AI.

Responsibilities

  • Gain hands-on experience innovating with AI technologies, particularly in the water sector
  • Develop bots and contribute to Generative AI pursuits, including research, troubleshooting, and collaborating with the team
  • Develop technical milestones and a poster board to visually represent the intern’s experience with the Innovation team

Skills

  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience in Machine Learning, Deep Learning, or Artificial Intelligence
  • Advanced proficiency in Python for writing clean and production-ready code
  • Appreciation for iterative development and continuous improvement
  • Must be currently enrolled fulltime in an undergraduate or graduate program
  • Must have at least 30 credit hours complete
  • Must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in a quantitative field (e.g., Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, Operations Research)
  • Strong experience with Machine Learning & AI Development and deploying reliable ML systems
  • Real-time data processing, monitoring model drift, and data validation
  • Proficiency in Python for API-based model deployment
  • Awareness of ethical considerations in AI development and safety protocols
  • Strong communication skills for explaining complex AI concepts

  • Proven ability to lead projects and deliver end-to-end solutions, particularly in a fast-paced or start-up environment
  • Familiarity with SQL, Spark, and cloud-based data platforms
  • Experience in Natural Language Processing (NLP), language modeling, and sentiment analysis
  • Previous client-facing roles, delivering high-quality outcomes in collaboration with diverse teams
  • Preferred Majors: Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Innovation Science
  • Proficient in MLOps, optimizing training and inference to maximize hardware efficiency
  • Experience with multi-modal data handling and AI advancements, especially in large language models (LLM)
  • Ability to balance innovation with production readiness, ensuring scalable AI solutions
