Position Overview
As a senior leader within the Information Technology team, the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Director drives JSI’s mission by providing strategic expertise in the responsible assessment and implementation of AI technologies. This role is designed to bridge the gap between cutting-edge technology and on-the-ground impact, ensuring JSI leads the sector in ethical and sustainable AI applications for public health, and education. The Director acts as both a visionary strategist and a hands-on builder, overseeing the AI roadmap from concept to execution across corporate processes and programmatic solutions. Collaborating across a broad set of stakeholders, the Director ensures all AI initiatives meet rigorous privacy and security standards while fostering an innovative, AI-literate organizational culture.
Reporting to the Chief Information & Technology Officer, this role may supervise a team and can be located in any U.S. State where JSI is registered.

Responsibilities
Thought & Strategy
- Strategic Roadmap & Audit: Provide ownership of the organizational AI roadmap, including conducting an audit of current infrastructure to deliver 3-5 high-impact AI opportunities within the first 12 months.
- Governance & Ethics: Establish and enforce guardrails for data privacy (GDPR/HIPAA/PHI) and IP protections to ensure the responsible and ethical use of AI, including advising and assisting project staff as appropriate.
- Strategic Growth: Partner with technical leads to integrate AI innovations into business development efforts, articulating a clear value proposition for proposals.
- Full-Lifecycle Management: Own the end-to-end AI product lifecycle, including selection of the technology stack, data organization, prompt engineering, and model training.
- Operational Efficiency: Advise on "build vs. buy" decisions to optimize resource allocation between off-the-shelf tools and custom model development.
- Accountability: Drive the integration of AI initiatives across internal corporate operations and external-facing programmatic solutions to achieve cost reductions or revenue generation.
- Organizational Literacy: Create and conduct internal training, guides, and webinars to raise AI literacy and assist project teams in identifying high-value AI use cases.
- Technical Stewardship: Maintain deep expertise in modern AI architectures (RAG, Fine-tuning, Agentic workflows) and their cost and security implications.
- Stakeholder Leadership: Influence and work effectively with cross-functional teams to identify training needs and implementation opportunities.
- Vendor & Partner Management: Identify and manage strategic relationships with external vendors and partners to enhance JSI's technological capabilities.
Education, Experience, Skills, and Competencies
- Master's degree or equivalent experience, in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field or equivalent experience.
- 10+ years of progressive relevant experience in Data Science, Software Engineering, or Product Management with at least 5 years focused specifically on AI/ML applications.
- Demonstrated deep understanding of modern AI Architecture (RAG, Fine-tuning, Agentic workflows) and their cost, and security implications; and familiarity with Open-source (Llama3, Mistral) and closed (Gemini) models.
- Experience using AI to transform business processes required, and in the context of health care, public health or education is preferred.
- Knowledge of ethical considerations related to AI applications in health and education, and compliance with data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA, the U.S. President’s Executive Order on AI, U.S. state laws, EU AI Act, CCPA, etc.).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders effectively.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with a collaborative approach to work, and able to influence and work effectively with cross-functional and multi-cultural teams.
- Strong project management and organization skills with an ability to thrive and deliver in a fast-paced environment and handle changing priorities.
- Fluent oral and written English communication skills. Fluency in English is essential for effective communication and collaboration in our diverse and global work environment. Fluency in a second language (French, Spanish, Portuguese, or others) is preferred.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally, if necessary up to 10%.
- Frequently operates a computer. Stands and walks during events.
- Ability to maintain a comfortable and ergonomic posture while working or bending, sitting, kneeling, lifting, driving.
