Security Administrator
Martin County Sheriff's OfficeThe position of Security Administrator is responsible for protecting and maintaining the organization's network by managing firewalls, monitoring for threats, enforcing security policies, and ensuring compliance with cybersecurity standards while supporting reliable connectivity and performance. The Administrator reports directly to the Information Technology Manager.
Essential Functions
Responsibilities require consistent attention and commitment to the agency's mission. All assigned duties and tasks are expected to be performed in an effective, efficient and safe manner. The jobholder must accept the responsibility to support and promote this organization's mission and comply with its directives. Personal conduct and behavior (on duty as well as off duty) must be such that it does not bring disrepute or unnecessarily endanger the public's trust or confidence in the agency or its members. This position requires a high level of self-initiative and the ability and willingness to work a majority of the time without direct supervision. Successful performers are those who are capable and willing to make decisions that are consistently in line with the agency's mission, goals and objectives.
The duties of the Security Administrator include but are not limited to:
- Administer, configure, and maintain firewalls, VPNs, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), and other network security tools.
- Monitor network traffic and security alerts to detect, analyze, and respond to potential threats or breaches.
- Implement and enforce security policies, standards, and procedures to safeguard network infrastructure.
- Conduct regular vulnerability assessments, penetration testing, and risk analysis of network systems.
- Maintain and update security patches, firmware, and configurations for network devices.
- Develop and maintain detailed documentation of network configurations, security policies, and system architecture.
- Coordinate incident response and forensic analysis for network-related security incidents.
- Evaluate, recommend, and implement new security technologies and tools.
- Ensure compliance with organizational, legal, and regulatory cybersecurity requirements.
- Provide training and guidance to IT staff and end users on security best practices.
- Perform regular backups and disaster recovery tests to maintain system integrity and availability.
- Collaborate with other IT teams to ensure secure network design, architecture, and integration.
- Review and analyze security logs and reports for anomalies or policy violations.
- Participate in security audits, reviews, and external assessments.
- Provides and coordinates employee training and support in network security concepts and data maintenance techniques.

Physical Demands
Position requires ability to sit and talk or hear for extended periods of time. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, power tools and to handle other computer components is also required. Position does not typically require heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying of moderately heavy loads.
Work Environment
Work conditions are generally stable. Tasks are performed mostly inside during a 40-hour on-site work week with on-call availability on a rotating basis.
Removal
Removal can be with or without fault of the jobholder or the agency. Economic conditions that cause reductions in work force, the member's inability to attend regularly to work, chronic illness, and a failure to perform competently on any of the critical tasks of the position or a consistent failure to perform competently on regular tasks are among the major reasons for job removal without the fault of the jobholder. Failures to support the agency's mission, uphold the oath of office, behave in a manner that supports the Sheriff's Office Code of Conduct, continually comply with preconditions for original employment, or display due regard for the civil liberties of any persons will lead to removal with or without fault. In addition, accruing an inordinate amount of dysfunctional work time or requiring an inordinate amount of supervisory counseling or remedial training will lead to removal with or without fault.
