The Job Profile
Simon & Schuster Adult Fiction is looking for an Editorial Assistant to work in their quality commercial fiction team.
Reporting to the Executive Publisher for Fiction and supporting the Fiction editorial team, this is an exciting role for someone who loves all types of fiction, from romance and book club fiction to crime, thrillers, suspense and Science Fiction and Fantasy, and wants to work with books and authors who will reach a wide audience.
The Job Role
Administrative responsibilities will include generating and maintaining editorial data on internal systems, liaising with copyeditors, proof-readers, freelancers, typesetters and authors, running reports (TCM, TMM, etc), developing and maintaining content on the databases, be a key point of contact between Editorial teams, processing and managing relevant payments, submitting prize entries and other general administration.
Editorial responsibilities will include assisting with writing jacket copy and briefing jackets, creating, updating and checking Advance Information Sheets, preparing prelims, end-matter and corrections for paperbacks, reprints, and new editions, collating proof-readers’ and authors’ proof corrections when required, general editorial research, liaising with Rights, Marketing and Sales on catalogues, reading and reporting on submissions and regularly communicating with authors and their agents; contributing ideas for backlist reinvigoration and monitoring titles online and updating metadata.
The Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will have a can-do attitude, be able to take their own initiative and will thrive in a busy and varied role. They will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, with an exceptional grasp of spelling and grammar, and a meticulous eye for detail. They’ll be a keen team player with an ability to interact at all levels, who can understand and respond to team needs, shifting priorities, and work collaboratively to meet deadlines.
This role doesn’t require prior publishing experience, but someone who has an interest in commercial fiction, awareness of the commercial fiction market and the ability to read broadly and contribute to team discussions with energy and enthusiasm is essential. Awareness of or interest in the publishing landscape would be welcomed with an eagerness to learn and be excited to take the first or second step in their publishing career.
Salary
Starting salary from £27,000
