Key Responsibilities

  • Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations.
  • Facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel.
  • Conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances.
  • Determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States.
  • Preventing the illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband.

The work is physically demanding, requiring officers to conduct inspections, handle seizures, and engage in law enforcement activities. Officers must be able to pass a fitness test and maintain a high level of physical fitness throughout their career.Officers are responsible for enforcing laws and regulations at ports of entry, border crossings, and within the interior of the country. They may work in a variety of environments, including offices, airports, seaports, and along the U.S.-Mexico border.Officers are also expected to develop strong communication and interpersonal skills, as they interact with diverse groups of people, including travelers, importers/exporters, and other government agencies.The job requires a strong sense of integrity and a commitment to upholding the law, as officers are empowered to make decisions that impact national security and public safety.
