Departmental Overview

University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) strengthens Berkeley's excellence through engagement with alumni, parents, undergraduate and graduate students, and friends of the university, raising public awareness about Berkeley and increasing private philanthropy. UDAR provides overall direction for the campus's philanthropic advancement strategies and works to strengthen unit development in partnership with campus fundraisers. The division handles a range of central activities and services encompassing communications, stewardship, prospect development, gift management, and more.

A full-service professional team, External Relations and Marketing Communications supports these activities with videos, websites, events and programming, email campaigns, slide decks, printed collateral, and more.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Digital and Multimedia Communications Lead, the Social Media Manager will act as a key member of UC Berkeley's University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) Editorial team by monitoring, populating, and maintaining the various social media channels under UDAR's purview (e.g., LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram). In addition, the incumbent will administer a site for alumni, parents, and friends to share, curate, and create social content. Further, this position will partner with the digital and design teams to support the maintenance and creation of CMS website content, ensuring social media cards are in place with UDAR websites and other platforms. As a social media expert, the Social Media Manager will also act as a consultant and creative collaborator with editorial, UDAR, and other campus leadership for matters where the university should monitor emerging social media trends and currents as they pertain to UC Berkeley or its constituents (e.g., colleges, faculty, staff, students). This position will also have a keen eye for new higher-ed platform trends and be proactive in taking advantage of emerging social media modalities by claiming institutional accounts on new platforms as appropriate.

The Social Media Manager will be an experienced professional who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field; independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; possesses broad job knowledge; analyzes problems / issues of diverse scope and determines solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Strategy development: Key member of UC Berkeley's advancement communications planning process. Develops integrated social media strategies in coordination with broader outreach efforts; develops short- and long-term social media communications plans and engagement metrics, analyzes patterns and insights, and makes data-driven recommendations; researches current-state and upcoming higher-ed trends. Incumbent will also act as a monitor for social network currents (e.g., Twitter trends) and pass that information along to leadership as appropriate, not acting to intervene but bringing leadership knowledge with which to make informed action decisions.
  • Content creation and distribution: Collaborates with marketing communications staff (video, editorial, design) to develop channel-specific assets to promote news, stories, and events. Manages UC Berkeley Twitter account, Facebook page, LinkedIn university page, and help manage YouTube account and Giphy channel. Will track emerging platforms and create new @Cal accounts for the brand when appropriate to ensure a foothold on nascent services.
  • Engagement: Manages and promotes Cal Ambassador Network - a site for Berkeley alumni, parents, and friends to share, curate, and create social content. Curates usergenerated content through the Stackla platform for major events (e.g., commencement, homecoming).
  • Collaboration and consulting: Increases advancement of social media engagement and brand consistency across departmental and university areas; coordinates posts with other units' social media staff such as public affairs, admissions, and annual programs; collaborates with marketing communications staff to develop training sessions and best practice materials; offers one-on-one consulting. Maintains and updates content on the Cal Bears mobile sticker app (Giphy) in close collaboration with the design team. Collaborates with the design team on story/narrative content to accompany visual content for Instagram.
  • CMS website project management, content: Partners with digital and design department colleagues to project-manage, content curate, and enter content for Wagtail CMS web projects. Ensuring social media cards are in place for Cal websites and on other platforms.
  • Professional development: Maintains currency with emerging and state-of-the-art social media higher-ed trends.

Required Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of the current social media landscape, including skill to create content in an appealing, lively, and relevant way.
  • Thorough understanding of technical language and requirements of the assigned work, including accessibility standards.
  • Background in editorial, video, and/or design work.
  • Content management skills and basic understanding of a CMS website platform (e.g. Drupal, Wagtail, Wordpress).
  • Thorough interpersonal communication and creative collaboration skills.
  • Thorough skills to develop and implement original ideas and correctly identify and effectively solve problems.

Education

  • Bachelors degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Thorough understanding of organization's processes, procedures, and applicable rules and regulations for web communications.
  • Experience in strategic communications.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salaery that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $74,300 - $104,400 annually, salary level to be commnesurate with experience.

  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position, and eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This is a non-exempt, monthly paid position.
  • This is a hybrid-friendly position, eligible for 75% remote capability.
